Steeplejack – Allchimneys Steeplejack team carrying out repairs to a concrete industrial chimney in Kent (100ft)

Allchimney’s Steeplejack team first carried out a full visual inspection of this 100ft concrete chimney. Steeplejack ladders were initially erected to gain access to the chimney top. Remedial repairs consisted of loose lightning protection down conductors, minor spalling of concrete at mid-way section due to rusting of reinforcing and painting of the smoke band (the black section at the chimney head)

Of more serious concern was that the top concrete ring had developed some vertical cracks. Our recommendation was to install 2 bespoke Mild Steel retaining bands to hold the top section secure and prevent further cracking. The mild Steel bands were made in 4 sections, full circumference, 100mm depth and 5mm thickness. Flanged with 2 x 20mm bolts.

Most lightwork repairs can be carried out from traditional bosun’s chair or steeplejacks seat board rigged to the chimney top. Work carried out over long periods of time or involving heavy lifting we install high level scaffold sometimes referred to as a steeplejacks ‘Flying stage’ or use the services of a local crane company.

This photo shows the process of laddering a chimney or structure with traditional steeplejack ladders. Steeplejack ladders are generally 10ft in height, made of Aluminium and have ‘out riggers’ standing the ladder away from the chimney, church spire or structure they are installed too. Each 10ft ladder has opposite male/female ends allowing the steeplejack to slot one ladder onto another. There is no height limit to ladder erection. Steeplejack ladders can be installed vertical to industrial chimneys, toward the structure when installed to church spire and even angled back in cases where a cooling tower is to be accessed by temporary ladder. Fixing steeplejack ladders can be by many methods depending on the structure and usage but a minimum of two fixings per ladder is employed with attachment to temporary or permanent fall arrest equipment.

Allchimneys will also carry out NDT testing, using an ultrasonic thickness test to determine the current thickness of the chimney shell; readings are taken from the chimneys base and at intervals on every chimney section to the capping ring or plate at the chimneys top.

Should the chimney be of multi flue design we are also able to inspect the chimney liners with our CCTV inspection equipment. All of our chimney inspections are followed with a detailed report including our recommendations and cost of repairs.
